Saba Kordafshari sentenced to 24 years in prison for walking without hijab

Iran's Supreme Court has rejected a request for a retrial of Saba Kordafshari, who was sentenced to 24 years in prison for protesting against the mandatory hijab. According to the HRANA news agency, after Ms. Afshari's lawyers asked for a retrial and a retrial of the defendant, Branch 28 of the Supreme Court rejected the request, and thus her prison sentence was upheld. This civil activist was sentenced to 24 years in prison on three charges, and according to the Islamic Penal Code, the highest sentence issued in this case is 15 years in prison on charges of "corruption and prostitution." Saba Kurd Afshari, one of the activists of the "White Wednesdays" campaign, was arrested in June 2019 in Tehran. After a while, Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran sentenced this civil activist to 15 years in prison on charges of "encouraging corruption and prostitution," to seven and a half years in prison on charges of "conspiracy to commit a crime against national security," and to "activity." Propaganda against the regime "sentenced him to one and a half years in prison. Rahela Ahmadi, the mother of Saba Kurd Afshari, who supported her daughter's activities, was also sentenced to 31 months in prison. Ms. Ahmadi was arrested in February to serve her sentence and transferred to Evin Prison. International organizations and human rights defenders have strongly criticized the Islamic Republic for its crackdown on dissent. In its latest annual report on the human rights situation in various parts of the world, which was published last March, the US State Department referred to Saba Kurd Afshari and some other activists and said that the Islamic Republic should "kill" civil activists and their families for a long time. He ignores them and pressures them to get a "TV confession".
